Where are We? is a companion app that retrofits many classic RPGs with real-time mapping. The companion app runs along-side the game you are playing and offers not only a map but also a wealth of information to assist you with your gaming adventure. Where are We? has various selectable levels of detail that you can chose from, allowing you to get the right amount of information on the Map display. The Where Are We? app was key in creating the database pages here at Dungeon-Crawl Classics for games such as Wizardry 5 and Might and Magic 3.
Application Modes
Minimal Mode: This mode adds mapping capabilities. The map only reveals areas that you have explored and unexplored areas are fully opaque. You cannot see the node details for areas you have not explored. Foes are only visible on the map when you are in sight range per the game design.
FAQ Mode: In this mode, the map is dimmed when you have not explored the area yet. This allows you to hover map nodes to reveal details about the node and then decide if you want to explore the area or not. Foes are only visible on the map when you are in sight range per the game design.
Full Visibility: The map is fully visible for all regions of the game where you have explored them or not. All Foes are visible on the map for the location your character is currently in.
Trainer Mode: Trainer mode is available in conjunction with each of the above modes. Trainer mode allows for most character and game data to be directly modifiable within the Where are We? interface. You can change your character stats, edit your inventory, or teleport around the map.
Application Usage
There are a few potential users.. the cartographer and the gamer…
Cartographer’s Toolset
Where are we? is an exceptional mapping tool that can be used to create your own map versions for the game areas that you explore. You can create your own notations and details on the maps.
Gamer’s Toolset
Where are we? provides access to game data such as Foe details, Item and Gear details, and Spell details in one of many application windows. A player can see the data in real time or ahead of time to plan and prepare. The player can use pre-existing maps and “follow” it to complete the game. Where are We? provides more robust data views than some of the classic games — an example is the Party Information screen. On the Party Information screen a player has access to all the details of the party make up from statistics to inventory. There are many valuable data views within the application — you can find these by exploring the Game menu or by reading the App Documentation.
