A note about quick save. Tapping Q and then (N)o will perform a quick save. If something bad happens you can terminate DOSBox and relaunch to restore from Quick Save. This a permadeath nerf.. don’t use it if you don’t want to to use it. Otherwise, know that it is there to save hours of time.

The following is a guide written during my own playthrough. I have removed the Maps that I created using Gridmonger so that you can be inspired to make your own maps, that is part of the fun.

Expand to reveal Party Build used for this playthrough
1 - N-Fighter (Dwarf)-------------------------->

1 is not changing, they will be a high-level fighter
4 is not changing, they will be a high-level thief
2 and 3 will be front-line'ers, change from Fighter only after 125 HP
5 should change to Mage asap after 75 HP, then Bishop after Mage/13
6 change after 5 is Bishop, to ensure party has enough Divine spell points

Early game is fine without a mage if you are mapping
Save g.p. as you need to buy a lot of items to progress the story
Always Identify your key items, so you can use them when the time comes
Always grind out XP and Gold on new floors, catalog enemies, and map level

(Character Level 0-3)
Fight at the base of the stairs until all characters are Level 3
Hold <Spacebar> to get encounters
Use Spells to stay healed
Restore Spell Points as needed by napping at the Stables

Buy equipment with these priorities
-Heater Shield, for everyone that can wear
-Leather Sallet, for everyone that can wear

(Character Level 3-7)
Buy equipment with these priorities
War Hammer, Heater Shield, Plate Mail, Leather Sallet, Leather Gloves
for Primary Fighter
Battle Axe, Heater Shield, Plate Mail, Leather Sallet, Leather Gloves
for all other Fighters
Thieves Bow, Leather Armor, Leather Gloves for the Thief
Staff, Chain Mail, Leather Sallet, Leather Gloves for all Priests
Expand to reveal Level 1 details
Make your way to (28E, 13N)
There is a locked door here to the North
Your Thief will need to Pick this door, for the SILVER KEY


Make your way to (21E, 11N)
There is another locked door here to the South
Your Thief will need to Pick this door
Find the ORB OF LLYLGAMYN

Make your way to (20E, 27N) via the Secret Door at (5E, 15N)
Answer the Riddle: VAMPIRE
Beyond the Riddle door, encounters may be Ironose, buy the Key for 300 g.p.

Make your way to (6E, 3N), use the BRASS KEY, sequence DBCA
Make your way to (2N, 3N), pick the lock
Make your way to (4E, 4N) for Encounter, then collect BAG OF COINS
Make your way through the darkness to (12E, 4N)
Use the BAG OF COINS, enter the Shimmering Portal
Expand to reveal Level 2 details
Start Mapping the level and cataloging the enemies as you explore
Now on floor 2; Make your way to (3W, 14S) to get the BOTTLE OF RUM
Notice (7E, 4S) is elevator 2-5, for later
Go back through Shimmering Portal to Level 1
Make your way to (5W, 27N), use SILVER KEY
Descend the stairs at (7W, 28N)
Make your way to (7E, 3N), use BOTTLE OF RUM, SODA

Continue mapping every accessible corner of Levels 1 and 2
Take out the Golem at (E15, N23, D1)

Grind Spots
- You may want to grind near the Ice Phantoms
- YOu may want to grind near Hurkle Beast
- You may want to grind the Werebat (answer the Vampire riddle wrong)
[316 XP; Chest; 24-42gp for each survivor, plus items]

The bat is by far the fastest gold.
I saved the gold and purchased the figurine
All characters are Level 10 except for the Priest/Mage who is Level 8
Let's continue.

Make your way to (E0, N6, D2) and Pick the lock
Search ~9 times at (E4, N3) for the HACKSAW
Talk to Duck of Sparks (10E, 10N)
Use HACKSAW at (2E, 15S) and make the Potion of Spirit-Away (8E, 0N)
Choose (FCA)
At (4E, 0N), use the Potion of Spirit-Away to obtain the JEWELED SCEPTRE
Expand to reveal Level 3 details
Use the Elevator at (7E, 4S 2D) to travel between 2-5; 
on each floor you will start at (7E, 4S)
Start Mapping the level and cataloging the enemies
as you explore and save g.p.
Make your way to (8S, 7E); find that Mad Stomper in that area
Befriend and then Buy the RUBBER DUCK
Return to Duck of Sparks at (9E, 3N, 2D), trade RUBBER DUCK for MUNKE WAND
Return to Mad Stomber and get another RUBBER DUCK to help with Swimming
Make your way to (12E, 5N) and use to JEWELED SCEPTER
Make your way to (12E, 8N) for the BLUE CANDLE
Swim at (26E, 14S) for GOLD KEY, do not carry gold into the pool.
Swim at (2W, 14S) for PETRIFIED DEMON
Expand to reveal Level 4 details
Use the Elevator at (7E, 4S 2D) to travel between 2-5; 
on each floor you will start at (7E, 4S)
Start Mapping the level and cataloging the enemies
as you explore and save g.p.

Make your way to (9E, 9S) for the SKELETON KEY
Make your way to (11E, 7S) and search for the BATTERIES
Expand to reveal Level 5 details
Use the Elevator at (7E, 4S 2D) to travel between 2-5; 
on each floor you will start at (7E, 4S)
Start Mapping the level and cataloging the enemies
as you explore and save g.p.

Make your way to (7E, 1S); buy a TICKET from Big Max
Make your way to (5E, 12S); talked to Snatch about a Pocket Watch
Back to 3; expand for details
Make your way to (6E, 9N) and search.  
Use BATTERIES then Code CDEG to obtain POCKET WATCH
Make your way to (12E, 25S) and use the BLUE CANDLE
Make your way to (12E, 28S) and use the Stairs to a new part of Level 4
Back to 4; expand for details
Turn on 7 Access Gates in Bank and Trust by matching on the first letter.
Access Gate Switches: (9W, 31S),(8W, 25S),(11W, 33S),
(12W, 28S),(17W, 34S),(16W, 30S), (17W, 28S)

Make your way to (15W, 21S) and use the GOLD KEY
Traverse Hall of Mirrors: Front start (1S,2E,1N,1E,2N,1W,1N,2E,3S)
Make your way to (1W, 24S) answer riddle TIME
Make your way to (4E, 24S) and use SKELETON KEY
At (2E, 24S), use POCKETWATCH,
talk to Loon, buy LARK IN CAGE for 10,000 g.p.
You will be teleported back to Castle, rest up.
Use stairs at (15E, 9N, 1D) to (6E, 3N, 4D)
Make your way to (6E, 17S) and use PETRIFIED DEMON
Collect the JACK OF SPADES at (11E, 16S)
Expand to reveal Level 6 details
From Level 1, make your way to (18E, 6S) for a Chute to (3E, 27S, 6D)
Start Mapping the level and cataloging the enemies
as you explore and save g.p.
Make your way to (0E, 2S); Get the ICE KEY
after meeting Horbules and Blank Stare
Make your way to (8W, 9S); Get the QUEEN OF HEARTS
after meeting Lady Neptune
Make your way to the room of (7W, 2S)
to find Evil Eyes, steal GOLD MEDALLION from him
Make your way to (14E, 5S) and use the GOLD MEDALLION to awaken Yog
Note the Mannequin at (7E, 18S)
Talk to Yog about the Ice Ferry and Mannequin to learn the sequence
Make your way to (7E, 18S) and turn on the
Ice Ferry (GDAFEBC), use the ICE KEY
Make your way to (8E, 25S) find the Ice King
to get KING OF DIAMONDS
Castle, rest up
Expand to reveal Level 7 details
It is a long walk back down to 7, consider a 
MALOR to level 6 and then use the Stairs at (E10, S27)
Start Mapping the level and cataloging the
enemies as you explore and save g.p.

Make your way to (5W, 13S), Use MUNKE WAND to get STAFF OF EARTH
Make your way to (12W, 7S), Use LARK IN CAGE
to get STAFF OF AIR, answering Riddle LIFE
Make your way to (10E, 12N, obtain STAFF OF WATER
Make your way to 13E, 4S) and use the LIGHTNING ROD
Make your way to (13E, 9S) obtain STAFF OF FIRE
Expand to reveal Level 777 details
Access Ghost Nest via (E14, N14) on Level 7 then to (E76, 63S)
Meet various ghosts each with clues
You can also grind many levels here.

There is more to explore but this is all you need to do.
Expand to reveal Level 8 details
If you return to the Castle during this final sequence you will reset it

Back to Level 7
Make your way to (5E, 5N), give QUEEN OF HEARTS
Make way to (1W, 1S), use ORB OF LLYLGAMYN on Blue Flame, enter portal
Now on Level 8; go to (0E, 6S) and defeat your clones
Go to (0E, 4S), Equip and use STAFF OF WATER (B,E,H) (Growth)
Back to Level 7
Make your way to (6W, 5N), give JACK OF SPADES
Make way to (0E, 1S), use ORB OF LLYLGAMYN on Red Flame, enter portal
Now on Level 8; go to (6W, 0N) and defeat your clones
Go to (4W, 0N) Equip and use STAFF OF EARTH (A,D,I)(Nature)
Back to Level 7
Make your way to (6W, 6S), give KING OF DIAMONDS
Make way to (0E, 0N), use ORB OF LLYLGAMYN on Yellow Flame, enter portal
Now on Level 8; go to (6E,0N) and defeat your clones to get ACE OF CLUBS
Go to (4E, 0N) Equip and use STAFF OF FIRE (C,F,G)(Change)
Back to Level 7
Make your way to (5E, 6S), give ACE OF CLUBS
Make way to (1W, 0N), use ORB OF LLYLGAMYN on White Flame, enter portal
Now on Level 8; go to (0E, 6N) and defeat your clones
Go to (0E, 4N) Equip and use STAFF OF AIR (all candles)(Man)
Back to Level 7
Make your way to (0E, 0N) to confront S O R N
Cast a Summon spell and the Gatekeeper will arrive and dismiss the protective shield
Defeat S O R N
Return to the Castle
